It Couldn't Happen to Me: Three True Stories of Teenage Moms by Beth Johnson

I bought my copy from Thrift Books. Ever am I delighted I did!! Everyone possesses an intelligence of some sort. These young ladies learned harshly the perils of misdirection. I am thankful they continue to persevere. I feel optimism for each of them: Johanna, Rasheedah, and Rachel. I would love to know how they have prospered despite the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Live and learn AND/OR

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia

Gimme more, gimme more, gimme more!!! Not 'gon put up a fight!!! Tell me more, tell me more, tell me more!!! When I placed a hold for this book at the library, I wasn't aware that it ran first in a trio. During reading, I placed holds for the next two books. Rita Williams-Garcia proves herself a phenomenal writer. I refuse to spoil the story. In eager anticipation, I wait for the next books!!!

A Christmas Present that Arrived A Week Early

Keith Richards (born on December 18,1943 Saturday) loves books, too!!! He maintains an expansive library in each of his homes. If you want to read more about his love of the written word, I implore you to read At Home With Books: How Booklovers Live with and Care for their Libraries by Estelle Ellis.

Great musicians possess theory of mind. Keith Richards' facial impression indicates broad-mindedness on this photograph with the great Aretha Franklin.

Himawari House by Harmony Becker

A book that breaks life with gentle candor. I love this book!!! I won't spoil it but Miss Becker illustrates the varying experiences of adapting to foreign soil. No one is too good or too wise. They suffer yet they ascend. The sparseness of the prose initially rattled me but I grew fond of it. Thank you, Harmony!!!

Lucky directed by Laura Checkoway

Truth beauty, beauty truth.~ John Keats

This woman has survived tumult. She is capable of love but in the film, we see her directing her love towards her family. On a lighter note, those of us who feel trapped by not investing in our appearance, watch this documentary and see if you are still willing to not make yourself beautiful. Since the end of filming, Lucky sees the worth in herself and has begun the process of healing.

Monday's Child

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace.
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go.
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living.
And the child born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, good and gay.

This fortune-telling poem dates to 1838.

According to "Monday's Child",

~Emicida works hard for a living.
~Froid and Cynthia Luz are full of woe. (I hope not! They're a couple and they're raising children.)
~Peter Doherty is fair of face.
~Carlos Barât is full of grace.
~Gilberto Gil is loving and giving. ( He is lifelong friends with Caetano Veloso. Both excel at musicianship and singing. Water seeks its own level.)
~Caetano Veloso is loving and giving. (I met him and I am convinced he provides love and generosity.)

Emicida (born Leandro Roque de Oliveira on August 17, 1985 Saturday)

Froid (born Renato Alves Menezes Barreto on September 1, 1993 Wednesday)

Cynthia Luz ( born Cynthia Helena Ribeiro Luz on January 12, 1994 Wednesday)

Peter Doherty (born March 12, 1979 Monday)

Carlos Ashley Raphael Barât (born June 6, 1978 Tuesday)

Gilberto Gil (born Gilberto Passos Moreira Gil on June 26, 1942 Friday)

Caetano Veloso ( born Caetano Emanuel Viana Telles Veloso on August 7, 1942 Friday)

Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso- two men who love each other and occupy the position of immense creators.

Every luminary in this post maintain the positions of sibling and parent. I pray that their children and siblings love, respect, and honor them. I pray their children realize the wisdom of their example and obey the path of love. The Heavenly Father is love and He reveals himself through art. The Heavenly Father is the Master Creator and He pours His love onto us. I see it especially in these individuals.

Embrace the pantheon of art!!!!

¿Recuerdas a Darlene Ortiz?

Me doblé.

A titia preferiu ficar no chão. Eu me dobrei.

Boa noite e esteja seguro." Minha mãe me deixou e me pegou no Savoy.

Reflection

I went to a 21st-birthday party at a club at the former Hollywood Park Casino around 2007-2009. I went to the Savoy Club to see Daley ("Alone Together") perform on June 6, 2015 Saturday. We waited 3 hours and 43 minutes. I enjoyed myself while waiting. There were music videos displayed plus the Savoy club serves TACOS!!! (It was my first time attending a club since my experience at the Hollywood Park Casino.) Everyone was pleasant, no fisticuffs or aggressiveness. I am still delighted that I waited. A surprise guest arrived that night: Marsha Ambrosius. We erupted with joy!!! "Alone Together" sounded exquisite even live!!!! I realized some valuable lessons that night. Yvonne Orji is not being deceptive when she says the wait is sexy. I met someone else that night, too. Remember Darlene Ortiz? She was Ice-T's girlfriend before he married Coco Austin. Darlene Ortiz was standing in front of me in line with her friend. She was gracious and it surprised me how much her style had evolved. She was still chic but not revealing as she had been. When she turned around, I recognized her immediately. Her face was still lovely. So was her figure. She told me she was writing a memoir. I am delighted that I am writing this paragraph. It reminded me that I have yet to read her memoir.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico was my spring break destination in the 11th grade. My mom, my auntie, and I headed down to the state of Baja California Sur. One night, we were resting from the day. I told my auntie: "I want to go out." So we (my auntie and I) walked onto the sidewalk. Seek and ye shall find. We didn't walk for long. I noticed a LIT venue. Cabo Wabo Cantina!!! Sammy Hagar's club. We danced manically. It got even hotter because there was no air conditioning in the club. CLASSIC ROCK!!! I went on the podium. Auntie chose to stay on the floor. Another lady on the podium drank plenty of alcohol. She started waving her fists to the music. She was so excited she punched me in the nose. I doubled over. It was obvious to me she wasn't cognizant of what she had done. Her friend: "she's drunk." Once I finished rubbing my nose, I told Auntie it was time for us to return to the hotel. She agreed. CALIENTE!!!

The Savoy was the only time I went to a club by myself thus far. Another lesson manifested. I had read that "every girl looks good at midnight." A man who I had not noticed approached me. "No, I am sleeping in my bed, sir. Good night and be safe." My mom had dropped me off and picked me up from the Savoy. No shame, no judging.

p.s. For those who don't know, the Savoy is in Inglewood, California. It is officially called the Savoy Entertainment Center. I ordered chicken tacos with cilantro and onion. You can eat tacos to your heart's content.

Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish by Martha Zamora

My love does not cease for Frida Kahlo. This tome provides light detail of her life. It doesn't provide immense analysis but it is pleasing for someone who wants a brief sketch of her life.

Look Again by David Bailey

I laughed quite a bit with this book. He's cantankerous and honest. He doesn't deny his shortcomings. He wasn't vile about sex even though he has a reputation for lots of it. I didn't know anything about him until I read this book. I love the dishing about days long gone. He has a raucous tale.

Good Talk: a memoir in conversations by Mira Jacob

** spoiler alert ** I value her perspective. But sometimes, I didn't like her response to a situation. A wealthy white lady named Bree hires her to write a book about her colonial ancestors. Bree admits that she was uncomfortable with Mira writing the book due to fears of plagiarism. If someone said that to me, it's time to leave. Bree invites Mira to lunch. Mira accepts. I don't get Mira's reasoning for going to lunch: "I wanted Bree to pay for it. I wanted my eating it to mean I was getting something for free (211)." Another moment is when her mother-in-law holds a dog party at her Florida home, some of the guests assume she's the help. Why didn't she say she's Lynda's daughter-in-law and let them serve themselves? I think she's too interested in politeness with strangers.

Tightrope: Americans Searching for Hope by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl DuWunn

Social failure and personal responsibility factor into poverty. Yes, we need greater investment in social services to edify society. Somehow, the individual must place priority on something substantial. On page 226, Kristof notes that Emmanuel Laster's family in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, has "three televisions, a pit bull, no food, much chaos." I don't understand that logic. The mother, Christine, discloses: "Mean critter. He's expensive to feed, but he keeps the utility people away, so that they don't cut off our power." Where does she find the funds to feed a dog if she cannot pay the utilities or provide for herself and her son? If Christine chooses to use her money to pay for pet upkeep and electronics, she could have redirected those funds into helping her household. Christine appears illiterate: "she hasn't had much schooling and had difficulty writing her name for us (226)." The Lasters could prosper but fail to secure provisions. Annette Dove, a leader of community outreach, alerts Emmanuel and Christine of an upcoming trip to Florida. On the day of departure, he arrives with $0.35 and outgrown shoes. At the end of their segment, Emmanuel stands on a worrisome path of bad associations.

On the gleaming note, a Nigerian immigrant named Tami Adewumi lived in a homeless shelter in New York City. He was exposed to chess through a part-time teacher who "encouraged the boy to sign up for the school's chess club (126)." His parents and his older brother supported his endeavours in addition to pursuing their goals. Tani became the state champion of chess in his age group. Tani and Emmanuel are both black but Tani had a wider support system. Annette Dove extended herself to Emmanuel but his mother needed rehabilitation and employment.

Kristof places more blame on the system. True, we need a higher quality of social services but personal responsibility stands stronger. Many of these people collapsed due to poor decision making. A worthwhile read.

Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival, and Hope in an American City by Andrea Elliott

I still feel optimism for this family. After all the strife, they managed to keep some sort of unit. I was disappointed at Dasani's actions at the boarding school. I hoped it would lead her on a path to prosperity. Then she could help heal her family. But she had short eyes. I thought since her mom and dad supported her, she would choose to excel. But Dasani accepted too much responsibility for her family's behavior and not enough for her own. I think these people can still prosper.

Bad Friends by Ancco

Too short!!! I wanted more depth. It was getting brilliant, then it ended. The colour scheme suits the mood of the story: dismal. It's depressing how much physical abuse gets hurled towards women. I didn't envision South Korea as a hotbed for corporal punishment.

I would read Ancco again.

Cybill Disobedience: How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think by Cybill Shepherd and Aimee Lee Ball

Light-hearted read. I expected a book of this description from Cybill Shepherd. She pretends no guilt about invading other people's marriages. Nor she does deny having long periods of lackluster projects in her career. She holds her looks in high esteem. Many women do, that's not unusual. It was disheartening when she confirmed the absence of friendship with Christine Baranski. I recall reading that there was a rivalry between them so it wasn't shocking.

This would be good to pass the time at the airport or at the doctor's office.

Moving Difference: Brazilians in London by Angelo Martins Junior

Quite scholarly. Many readers would not come across this book unless they needed it for school. Martins Junior includes subjectivity in the text. I would not tell someone to read this unless they had a heightened interest in Brazilians. This book does not use an abundance of layman's terms. I wonder if this book was a thesis. It feels that way.

I read this book on my initiative. Cheers, Angelo!!!

Girl in High Heels: Intimate Confessions of a London Stripper by Ellouise Moore

A cautionary tale slash memoir. Ellouise Moore lived a sedate life outside of her lucrative career of stripping. She delves lightly into analysis, admitting that her sexuality suffered from the necessity of playing a character at work.

It's light reading, nothing overwhelming but a bit saucy which proves enjoyable.

Love, Sorrow, and Rage: Destitute Women in a Manhattan Residence by Alisse Waterston

I became aware of this ethnography through browsing my library catalog. Sociology fascinates me. I am relieved that it wasn't overly scholarly. The language hovered on the boundaries of the laconic and sophisticated.

I read this book on my initiative but largely academics would pursue this book.

What Really Happens in Bed by Steven Carter and Julia Sokol

I laughed at many anecdotes. Others gave me feelings of sadness. I want frequent sex within a loving, monogamous marriage. It would intrigue me to know how much people could connect to this book in the 21st century. I feel much of it would still relate to people except for the L.A. Law and Dynasty references.

Pretty Modern: Beauty, Sex, and Plastic Surgery in Brazil by Alexander Edmonds

It's difficult for me not to enjoy a book on Brazil. I agree with a previous reviewer on the author's mislabeling of a luminary: on page 213, he states Naomi Campbell is African-American. Naomi Campbell is a confirmed black British woman. Other than that, I noticed no other errors. I prefer when ethnographies stick exclusively to oral history. Some of the analysis could go over some people's heads.

I read this on my initiative and it was a pleasurable use of time.

Frida: a biography by Hayden Herrera

One of my lifelong favorite books!!! Frida Kahlo stands as my favorite person, man or woman. Such a vibrant, sensual life. It astounds me that she lived with such fire and determination in spite of the perils she suffered.

I read this biography for the first time when I was 10 at my cousin Charisse's house. Her former husband had scholarly pursuits and kept the 1983 hardcover edition in their home. Every time I went to their house, I would carve time to read this book. I couldn't believe that she stayed with Diego Rivera after he slept with her sister. (I still don't understand how she could have reconciled with him as his wife.) I've bought multiple copies of this book. (One of my uncles kept it after I left my copy at his house.) I adore that she maintained an active sex life. I think it's awesome that a woman of the first half of the 20th century defied gender norms!!!

My love and affection for Frida endures!!!

Paid For: My Journey Through Prostitution by Rachel Moran

I am grateful that Rachel Moran found her way out of prostitution. The only way to prevent people from entering prostitution is education. The only way to get people out of prostitution is education. Even though most people just want a well-paying career, an individual will have to be trained for the new profession. This marks the first book I've read from a formerly prostituted woman who analyzes and details the damage inflicted from prostitution.

I am all the wiser for it.

Thank you, Ms. Moran.

Reading Behind Bars: A True Story of Literature, Law, and Life as a Prison Librarian by Jill Grunenwald

It started slow but by the fifth chapter, I began to enjoy it. Grunenwald survived a stint as a prison librarian. She lasted longer than both of us anticipated. (I could only work as a public librarian, hats off to Jill Grunenwald.) Her assertiveness and powers of observation intensify during her employment at the minimum-security prison. The prisoners earned some relief from their surroundings and Jill earned respect. G FOR GANGSTA!!!

Nobody Ever Asked Me about the Girls: Women, Music, and Fame by Lisa Robinson

I don't interpret misogyny from this book. I do see that Ms. Robinson disapproves of women not aging gracefully, although she acknowledges this feat comes with difficulty. Sometimes, I'll read an article online from Vanity Fair. Even with those excursions, I had not heard of Lisa Robinson. The more you know. I read this book gleefully. It's not gossipy but there's plenty of succulent anecdotes to keep you enthralled. I became aware of this book from browsing the catalog of my public library. So blessed to live in a country with abundance of public libraries!!!

The Art of Eating in: How I Learned to Stop Spending and Love the Stove by Cathy Erway

I would eat and prepare three recipes from this book. Among those three, I would alter two of the recipes. Miss Erway and I don't share the same palette. I eat many cuisines but I tend to stick to the dishes I adore. No weird or undercooked food for me.

~Coffee and Cigarettes Ladyfinger Sandwiches would be Coffee and Chocolate Ladyfinger Sandwiches. I refuse to add tobacco to my food.

~Four Pepper Pulled-Pork Chili: delete the pumpkin puree and black coffee. That's better.

~Almond Custard Tart with Leftover Muffin Crust: I'm leaving this alone. I fantasized about this dessert!!!

Cathy Erway comes off as wonderful company. She has a sweetness and intelligence that I adore. I loved the chapters on freeganism. It would help the environment plentifully if dumpster diving lacked stigma and legal ramifications.

Kudos to Cathy!!!

My Amy: The Life We Shared by Tyler James

I thought Tyler James and Amy Winehouse were occasional lovers. I recall seeing pictures of them together constantly. He clarifies that they weren't lovers but indeed soulmates. His devotion has not faded but strengthened with the epiphanies after her passing. The word 'bored' erupts often in this narrative when Amy describes her life without drugs. That's tragic. Maybe she craved excitement. It seems that way the way he says she complained of boredom. I would hate that. I get restless. But bored? No. I hate she didn't sort herself out with a strong psychiatric team.

Rest in eternal peace, Amy Jade Winehouse.

Like Sisters on the Homefront by Rita Williams-Garcia

Realistic fiction geared towards young adults. Experienced adults could read and enjoy this book also.
Many women could identify with the friendship between streetwise Gayle and pure-hearted Cookie. I wish Gayle had improved her spelling skills. I don't think she could read and write at a third-grade level. She was quick-witted but poorly educated. She had maternal affection and instinct but barely any scholastic inclinations. The ending provides hope.

I waited till adulthood to read this book. It was worth the wait.

Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait by Elizabeth Selby

I saw Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco in 2015 for my 30th birthday. My mother and I went to San Francisco as a wonderful getaway. (I wanted to stay in San Francisco much longer.) We were walking around Chinatown when I noticed an advertisement on the SFMTA bus for the Amy exhibit.
"Ooh, Mom! Amy Winehouse is at the Contemporary Jewish Museum!"
"You want to go?"
"YESSSSS!!!!!"

We went that afternoon. I still feel blessed that we went. My mother had held a dismal opinion of Amy. When we left the exhibit, she had become admiring of her. She hadn't believed me when I told her Amy had once been incredibly beautiful. Amy was still sexy and pretty during and post-Back to Black. Except for that period when she was ravishing the drugs. Nonetheless, I adore Amy Jade!!!

Always check your Goodreads recommendations!!! That's how I learned about this superb book. I don't socialize much these days so I prefer to stay centered around books. No criticisms, just glory!!!

The Word: Black Writers Talk About the Transformative Power of Reading and Writing edited by Marita Golden

I'll have to buy this book. This proves a book that requires frequent reference. No one pulled short. Every interview delivered pleasure and yet I wanted more. I felt a fervent connection to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It relieved me when she told of her parents' easy acceptance of her choice to pursue writing. I'll have to read Purple Hibiscus, that novel intrigues me. I adore how Pearl Cleage disclosed that "there is always a love story (85)" in her books. We need black people in love with each other.

This book needs to circulate more.

The Art of the Affair: An Illustrated History of Love, Sex, and Artistic Influence by Catherine Lacey and Forsyth Harmon

** spoiler alert ** A fun, light book that can be read in an afternoon. Many of the names I knew but I learned of a few people who were celebrated in their time but unrecognized now. The book claims Frida Kahlo fell in love with Leon Trotsky. They had an affair but I don't think it was love. Trotsky was her revenge.

If you love salacious gossip from the 20th century, read this book!!!

Frida: The Story of Her Life by Vanna Vicci

I am enamored of Frida Kahlo. Ever since childhood, I have been fixated by her. Another reviewer disclosed on the presence of sapphic images. Considering that Frida was openly bisexual, I think Vicci demonstrated a light hand on her lesbian liaisons. I find it remarkable that someone with grotesque physical pain could demonstrate a sex life to the capacity Frida lived. Spinal pain, atrophied leg, ulcers on her foot... there were few, if any, body parts that weren't damaged.

All of that and she still managed to live. An exceptional woman.

New Yorkers: A City and Its People in Our Time by Craig Taylor

I sensed depression and anxiety with many of the interviewees. I don't think most people possess the fortitude to live somewhere so maddening for an extended time. There's an abundance of excitement yet much misery makes itself known. Anyone looking to live or visit New York, New York ought to read this book.

Sisters and Lovers by Connie Briscoe

Wonderfully realistic... I identify with Beverly. I didn't think she was too picky. It's necessary to be picky when there's so much nonsense. I think she should have stayed single until her peace returned. But the three main characters needed a dose of clarity. I may read the sequel to see what became of the sisters.

It's my first time reading Connie Briscoe. I don't think it'll be the only time.

Tomes

Tome- a large heavy book, especially one dealing with a serious topic. (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

Tome-any book; especially a large or scholarly book. ( The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, College Edition)

I prefer the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary definition. A tome qualifies to be a book of mighty length. When I read a tome, it must be a topic that fixates me. Most books I read exceed 200 pages yet I measure a tome at 400 pages and above.

Twenty tomes I've read thus far:

1) A Life in Letters by Zora Neale Hurston, collected and edited by Carla Kaplan. 912 pages

2) Mick Jagger by Philip Norman. 640 pages

3) Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011 by Lizzy Goodman. 622 pages

4) Mystic River: a novel by Dennis Lehane. 592 pages

5) Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do by Studs Terkel. 589 pages

6) Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon - and the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller. 584 pages

7) Mother of Believers by Kamran Pasha. 560 pages

8) Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs at the Turn of the Millennium edited by John Bowe, Marisa Bowe, and Sabin Streeter. 560 pages

9) The Years with Laura Diaz: a novel by Carlos Fuentes. 528 pages

10) Jubilee by Margaret Walker. 497 pages

11) A Piece of Cake: a memoir by Cupcake Brown. 472 pages

12) The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. 448 pages

13) Spinning Straw into Gold: What Fairy Tales Reveal About the Transformations in a Woman's Life by Joan Gould. 448 pages

16) The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah. 430 pages

17) Life Notes: Personal Writings by Contemporary Black Women by Patricia Bell-Scott. 429 pages

18) Peach Blossom Pavilion by Mingmei Yip. 421 pages
